| Flounced skirts were the height of fashion throughout the 1850's. The number of flounces on a skirt varied, as did the size of the flounces. The Four flounce skirt was a favorite from 1854-56, but examples are seen as early as 1853 and as late as 1858. Also popular was a Three Flounced skirt, which is the same shape as the Four, but the top flounce is omitted. This version is seen as early as 1843, and as late as 1859. Used for both day dresses and ball gowns, the flounced skirt is universal throughout the period. Examples of fabrics used range from heavy plush, wool, and silk, to sheer fabrics and prints. This pattern fits best over TV142 - 1856 Walking Cage Crinoline. But we also have given instructions for adapting this pattern to fit over TV141- 1858 Round Cage Crinoline. The closure is in the center back, and the skirt is gauged onto the waistband. The flounces are gathered onto a cord. Shown at right as a petticoat over TV142. |
| Sizing and Yardage Information: This pattern is "one size fits all", the waist can be pleated to fit any given measurement.
Yardages given are with nap. Longer skirt lengths will require extra material.

The Natural Form era Petticoat with Detachable Train - TV121 is being retired. Instead, we will be replacing it with an updated version - TV125 - but with the same name. With a totally revamped train piece, I felt it would be better to rename the pattern as new, rather than issue a new version with the same number. The main body of the petticoat will be the same, with the netting pillowed between two layers in the back. But the changes include 2 small hem ruffles instead of 1 larger one. And the train will now come off the back of the petticoat behind the knee, rather than at the floor. This will allow the petticoat to be used with TV225 - Fantail Skirt. I have long wanted to "fix" this pattern so that it was more functional, and hopefully the new version coming very soon will do everything I need it to. Anyone who has ordered the TV121 petticoat after May 17th will be receiving the new TV125 version instead. We should have the new pattern available very soon.
