1875 Pleatmonster

Postby sarcasm-hime » Wed Jul 06, 2016 9:44 pm

It all started from an impulse buy (the checked silk) and just kept growing. I made it for the Historical Masquerade at Costume-Con this year.

Bodice was based on TV405, overskirt based on TV305 and underskirt based on TV216 (all pretty heavily modified). I combined several fashion plates I liked, as well as adding the front skirt detail (piped revers slashes) from an 1876 dress in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was my first Victorian ensemble (I've only done 18th century when it comes to historical) and it turned out way heavier than expected (9+ yards of fabric in the skirt alone!) but I'm pretty happy with it.

I went through all 3 seasons of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (and then some documentaries as well) doing the pleats on the train. There are also 2 rows of piping around all the bodice and overskirt edges.

I do need to beef up the petticoat with some organdy, as I discovered that the cotton I used is just not sturdy enough to support the weight of that massive skirt. I also want to fiddle with the placement of the internal tapes a bit more.

Fun fact: I made the hat while at the con, and pleated the neckline ruffle in the airport. Also, I forgot to bring ribbon so my pendant is hanging from a strip of electrical tape. ;D #alwaysprepared

Goodness, that's gorgeous!! Great work. I love the piping. What was your trick for all those beautiful pleats?

This is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL dresses I've ever seen! So very very well done! What a seamstress!!!! Love the hat, also! Did you have a pattern for the hat?

I used the Perfect Pleater board for making the pleats, and then gathered some of them after pleating.

For the hat I just eyeballed it (didn't use a pattern) and made a mockup out of paper.
