My 1887 Pink Polka Dot bustle gown

Postby Val » Sun Aug 16, 2015 8:46 pm

I made this outfit as part of a mini-theme, The Polka Dot Parade, some of us were doing at Costume College at the beginning of August. I had started the bodice last Sept to see if my fabric I chose would work, and then set it aside to make almost 8 months later when I had time to get back to it.
I used TV 400 for the bodice, and even tho it was 1870s, it had the square neck and peplum that was similar to my inspiration photo. My overskirt was TV 367 -Cascade Overskirt. I didn't have time to make a new skirt and ran out of the pink polka dot so I wore a solid black with pleated trim under it all.
The bodice pattern had lots of places to do trims and I want to add still more since I ran out of time and out of some materials. I did a hook & eye closure in front, then sewed tabs of black velvet ribbon across the front with a snap to hold one side. I used tiny brass antique Victorian buttons on them. I repeated the velvet tabs & buttons on my cuffs and across the back peplum.
The overskirt confused me a lot. It had pleats, gathers, and a burnouse pleat all going up into the side and waistband. Kind of similar to the #374 Asymmetrical overskirt that also confused me. But I kept pinning it different ways and finally got it to look decent. It's very pretty, and also lends itself to lots of trimming possibilities. Right now all it has is tiny pleats around the edges, with a narrow black velvet ribbon sewn on top of them.
This is a photo taken of me at Costume College.

I love this dress. It is so cute and fun. And it looks great with the black skirt.

I love the tabs! And those teeny pleats, I want to go cover something with bitty little pleats right now, immediately!

Mary, I've been making my pleats by hand up to now, just folding them, sometimes using a ruler or steel bone for my sizing, or just eye-balling it. But I discovered these pleating forks at Costume College that I can't wait to try.
They're by http://quickpleater.com/ I have the small set that are 1", 3/4", and 1/2". It's similar to the "fork pleating" method that Heather had shared with us years ago. The website has a video on how they work.
Good Pleating to you!
