New brown 1860 walking dress

Postby mette.wikkelso » Mon Oct 01, 2012 1:04 pm

I made myself a new walking dress, inspired by the brown walking/promenading dress from the Danish National Museeum. You can see the pictures here:

The text is unfortunately in danish, but the pictures should say it all. One of the most interesting things about the dress was, that I made the frills by hand, using tablet weaving.

Oh wow - that is absolutely beautiful! The translation option (not sure if that's a blog feature or a Chrome one?) works well enough to get the general idea from the text, too. Really impressed by that fringing you made! Did you follow a tutorial of some kind, or was it something you already knew how to make?

I love how you trimmed the skirt. Just beautiful! 8)

Thank you for the kind words.

The fringe was made entirely by my own, no tutorial involved. I can do rather advanced tablet weaving that I use for viking reenactment, and this just seemed like the easiest option for getting hold of a fringe that matched the cloth.

I have 2 questions. Number one, what is tablet weaving? Number 2 I have to learn how to make fringe!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: How does one make fringe? I can see too many possibilities.

I also have questions! About how long does it take to weave a yard (or meter, if you like) of the fringe you made for your dress?

I suspect a fair number of us just added tablet reading to our "to learn" list! Looks like a very useful skill to acquire.

I am working on a guide (hopefully for your wardrobe unlocked), but it's gonna take a while. So it should be nicely explained in time.
