Red and Black dresses

Postby smt22 » Tue Nov 29, 2011 6:42 am

Have you ever made a Red and Black dress? It sounds as though many of us have fallen for this colour combination at some point or other, and have either made a dress, or have one planned!

I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we could all post a picture of our Red and Black creations, just to see what different gorgeous things different people have made out of the same colour scheme. And perhaps it will inspire those whose Red and Black masterpieces are still in their heads 8)

My very first Victorian dress was Red and Black. I made it from a Simplicity pattern, and while I've learned a lot since 2006, I was mightily proud of this dress at the time! Here it is:

I look forward to seeing what others have to share :D

It's lovely, you should be proud. :D And now you've stirred up my red/black lust again.

Is the black part of the neckline a chemisette or part of the bodice?

Gorgeous dress! I know some people bash commercial patterns, but I think the historical patterns can look very good in the right hands. Obviously you're proof of that!

I'm so excited about starting my red and black dress! I won't get to start until next spring since I'm in the middle of a big project right now, so the red and black dress will be my fall/winter dress. Haven't decided on the design since I've been going back and forth, but it will definitely be NF. I have my red twill sitting out on my table, really because I forgot to put it away after going through my stash, but now it's there for inspirational support. And it's nice to look at! I also have five yards of crimson sateen that I need to do something with...like buy five more yards and make a dress out of it!

Mary, we should totally make our red and black dresses for next year's Heritage Day!

Here's my red and black - funny thing, I didn't twig till Susan started this thread that the reason I wasn't getting the urge to do the red and black thing was that I'd done it already! This one is out of Patterns of fashion.

Oh the pretties! You people are killin' me!

Gretchen, tell me that underskirt was pre-ruched material or I'm going to doubt your sanity. Image

The first thought when I saw that dress is "Holy crap, look at all that ruching!" I hope it was pre-ruched too, because I would have gone insane doing that tiny of rows.

Yes yes, pre-ruched! It was drapery fabric on sale for $5 a yard. I got it in a greenish gold too. I'm not quite insane enough to do that all myself.

Gretchen, you look fantastic in red.
Gemma, I've seen that dress in Patterns in Fashion and it looks totally intimidating. Can't figure out the pleats from the cutting diagram, but perhaps that's because the amount of fabric in itself is daunting so I didn't try very hard.
Gorgeous dress.

You can't see the black in the pictures very well. However, every piece of fabric is trimmed with black. I am still working on my hat and parasol! Once those are completed my dress will be complete!

I made a red and black gown for my daughter from the Parisian Trained Skirt pattern, one of my favorites!
