At last! - a new dress

Postby JP » Fri Jul 02, 2010 6:25 am

It seems I've been wanting a new dress forever but didn't really have an excuse for making one (ok, you're right, you probably don't need an excuse!). But I am going tomorrow to a Dickensian Afternoon Tea and so I set to work, and here is the result. I love the polonaise pattern and made it before for my daughters but here it is, for me.

Now, I just need to decorate my hat!

Update: Now been to the "do" and here is a picture of the dress "in action"!:

Love the fabric!! I think you just need to pick up the pack into poufs and it will look perfect.

Oh thank you Heather! It is a bit too "droopy" the back, isn't it? Just shorten those three pieces of ribbon holding the back? I'll go look up some pictures of how others have done it.

Thanks Tiffers!
Where are you based? You're not going to this Dickensian Garden Party at Rochester by any chance, are you?

Very pretty. I love the fabric, too! Now we need a picture of you in your dress and wearing your lovely hat! :)

Yep, just attach the skirt to points higher up the strings. I guess people get confused and think they need to attach to the bottom of the strings, but I made them too long so people can choose the best place (and how many places) to attach them together. I like to have adjustment room,to be able to play with the pickups and do fun things with them. 3 pickups, 5 pick-ups, 4 pickups, there are so many ways do it. The idea is to hang the dress up, or put in on a dress form, and then make it look like your vision of puffs. Like pruning a bonsai. :D

Hi Joelle,

We are based not far from Hungerford. Unfortunately we have other bits and pieces to accomplish this weekend, including finishing my own latest dress (and the first one I have made for myself!!). We are at Broadlands in Romsey next month. Its a multi period event and I have just thought that you and your family might enjoy it:)

Thank you Katharine!
As requested, here is a photo of me in my dress!

Heather, thank you so much! I never thought of what you said about the poufs! I thought, like you mentioned, that I was just meant to attach the skirt to the end of the tape and that was it. I did shorten them this morning before going to the garden party and it looked a lot better... but now I will examine it again and see about attaching it in more than one place perhaps!

Tiffers, thanks for the info on Broadlands. Looks interesting. If we are around (likely we will be away on holiday on that date) I would consider going to it!

Joëlle,
This costume (dress & hat) is lurvely as the English say & spot on for the summer. :)
I love the back of your Polonaise.
If you are going to Llandrindod hope to see you there .

It’s a pity the photos aren’t a bit bigger.

Merci Cathi!
Yes, the photos are a bit small but at the moment, I don't know how to make them bigger! I uploaded them on Flickr and when I post the link to here, they come up that size! Can anybody help? Any technical advice would be appreciated :D
