Purple Bustle Ball Gown

Postby pastryfairy » Sun Feb 28, 2010 5:18 pm

Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster - it's amazing how many talented seamstresses post on these boards, you all inspire me! So thought I'd post a couple pictures of my latest TV project. I got the fabric and trim on a trip to the LA garment district. Underneath the gown is my "Classic Victorian" corset from Dark Garden in SF, and TV 101 bustle petticoat. The dress itself is:

TV 208, 1885 Four-Gore underskirt, in a lightweight silver silk taffeta, with a knife pleated ruffle at the hem.
TV 305, Bustled Apron Overskirt, in a heavier purple silk dupioni, with a self fabric ruffle trim.
TV 416, 1875 Ball Gown Basque Bodice, in the same purple dupioni. I made some changes: I flat lined instead of full lining, and bound the raw edges with a self fabric bias tape. I moved the closure to the back and inserted silver tone grommets. I split the pleated basque in the back so that there are two separate pleats, one on each side. I laced it with a silver ribbon to match the underskirt. Interlined with cotton twill and lined with purple cotton sateen. 1" clear glass beaded trim at the neck line. Boned with spring and spiral steel at seams, darts, and CB. I have more of the beaded trim, which I plan to add to the sleeve edge, as well as the edge of the overskirt.

The patterns were a dream to use! The mockup needed a little fitting - extended the darts, took in the waist, shortened in front, and inserted a small horizontal dart in the front near the armhole to deal with some "gaposis". I have a very small waist in proportion to my bust and am also quite short, so I'm used to making extensive changes to patterns, but this one didn't need much.

Here are the photos (both taken by Kim Yasuda, http://www.flickr.com/photos/7181690@N03/):

Thanks so much, Heather, for these wonderful patterns. Next up, I plan to make a separate day bodice and overskirt, and reuse the same underskirt.
