TV560 Neo-Victorian Bustle Coat

Postby xole » Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:01 am

I'd been intending to make up this pattern in a strictly Victorian style, but that project got gazumped by a costume need... Meet the Morrigan Coat. It's still a bustle coat, and I'll wear it over my bustle in Winter, but for this occasion there was no Victorian costuming involved.

I made it in a wool boucle with a silver-grey satin lining. The box pleats have been doubled in width and done in a sheer silver fabric without a lining. The front has ribboned lozenges over the buttonholes, which match the lozenges over the three back slits. I added a feather fringe under the collar, plus a feather drape down the back, to give the illusion of wings. It's unboned, but stiffened to the hip line with heavy cotton twill. I wanted it to drape and move with me, so I deliberately didn't stiffen the lower half. I also changed the lining to a more modern style with facings at the front and collar back.

As usual, Heather's pattern fitted perfectly! I got so many comments on this coat.
