Button placement on tea gown

Postby leslye » Sat Sep 17, 2011 9:56 am

I am at the point to add buttons to my Tea Gown. I searched a long while at my local sewing supply store and found all of 21 buttons of a style I like. I knew that it would be a stretch to make them work. I don't sew much and am having a little trouble with the math. If I were to space the buttons evenly down the whole gown they would end up being 2.5" apart. I think that may just be a little too much space. My friend suggested that I space them close together at the top and further apart as I go down. What do you think? How can this be accomplished and look right. Need help please. :D

Yep, space them closer at the top, and wider at the bottom. I would to every 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" to hip level, and then gradually make them wider spaced from the hip down. If you run out of buttons, you can always sew the bottom closed, from mid thigh to the floor.

It is also very period to sew different (but similar) buttons alternating down the front.
