Gathering or pleating on #455 1830 gown

Postby Val » Thu Jan 02, 2014 7:02 pm

I've made one of the 1830s gowns and gathered it in the front, back and shoulders. But I wondered if anyone has tried pleating that instead, and were they happy with it? I'm getting ready to do this on a new bodice and pinned pleats in but it looks very full in the bust.
Photos of any done in pleating would be appreciated if you did. This is my previous one.

Just adding another question to this about the sleeve cuff. Last time I just sewed the facing on the slit opening of the cuff. Has anyone come up with other ideas to finish this?

You can easily do pleats instead of the gathers. The best way would be to cut the dress fabric from the lining pattern, and then place the pleats over the fabric, as you want then to be.

For the sleeve, if you cut a lining for the sleeve, then you can sew the fabric to the lining around the wrist and up the slit. Then when you turn it right side out, the slit if already finished.

At the suggestion of someone who said just tack them down, I pleated the part that would have been gathered and right now am tacking them down to keep them in place. Piece of cake!
Regarding the cuff slits, I was wondering if decorative buttons or something might have been put on them? I was thinking of possibly doing some little pleats around the cuffs.

Another pleating question for the skirt. The directions say to pin the center of the front panel to the center of the bodice, and the center of the two back panels to the bodice backs and pleat it. Do I also match the side seams of the skirt and bodice? It puts a lot of fabric in the back so wondered if I should just do it all btn the front and back?

The instructions say to match the center front of the skirt to the center front of the bodice, and then to match the placket edges of the skirt to the bodice back edges. It says this badly, and I think I need to rewrite that part.

The skirt should be set on evenly all around. You can have a little more fullness in the back if you prefer. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Thank you for the quick reply. Today I'll be pldating two skirts to the bodices so this helps.
