Petticoat for a riding habit

Postby jesmes » Mon May 23, 2016 8:17 pm

I am having to make several mid 1880's riding habits and I was wondering what sort of petticoat to put underneath. The habits are to be worn on stage the actresses just walk on wearing them, but I am thinking a normal bustle petticoat with frills down the back is going to be too much underneath.
I hope you can help me.

I think a simple petticoat will be just fine. After about 1875, a lady would not wear any petticoat at all, just a pair of trousers under her habit. If the lady did not have trousers, then a plain petticoat would suffice. The idea with the trousers was that if the lady fell off and needed to walk home, she could remove the skirt and be able to walk freely through rough terrain more easily.
