underpinnings for 1878

Postby Val » Thu Apr 25, 2013 3:39 pm

I'm making the 1878 skirt #221 http://www.trulyvictorian.net/tvxcart/p ... t=4&page=1
and long draped overskirt #324 http://www.trulyvictorian.net/tvxcart/p ... t=4&page=1.
I'm wondering what others have used as petticoats and any undestructure (bustle pad, lobster bustle?) for it.
My skirt seems very full and drapey in front because of my 36" waist/47" hips so there's a lot of fabric. I have it tied in the back but that doesn't affect the bottom portion. To keep it from draping around my legs I'm assuming a ruffled petticoat would help. I haven't been able to find out what if any goes under the back of the skirt. Just me?
Has anyone made this and what did you wear under yours?
This is going to be my 1878 Lady Photographer costume for the Gaslight Gathering Steampunk & Victoriana fashion show on May 5.

I use my two TV121 petticoats under mine. Yes, two of them. :)

Miss Cindy, I don't have that pattern but it looks like I could almost use my skirt pattern, with maybe one panel less, to get that same design. Not sure if I'm going to be able to make it with only one week to go but its possible.
Do you have any photos of you wearing your outfit with it?

There is a picture of one of my undies in this album and then the black dress is NF so I am wearing them under it. Also, the purple and green plaid dress is NF and I have them on.
The TV121 has netting, which is a bear to do, sandwiched between two layers to give more support, so I am not sure if just a petticoat will give the support that you are looking for.

I was going to use one petti I had but its ruffled is small. It looks to me like the wide ruffle gives better support. So I think I'm going to try and make one. Thanks for the feedback, Cindy.

I use the TV121 under mine. It's full enough in the back with the tiers of netting involved. Cindi, you use 2? wow!

I finished my entire outfit and wore it recently in the fashion show at Gaslight Gathering in San Diego. I still wasn't happy with my underskirt even with the deep ruffled petticoat. As you can see in this photo of me on the right, the bottom still caved in around my ankles. Afterwards my friend Cindy reminded me about sewing the 1" wide plastic crinoline you can buy in the curtain section of JoAnnes and sew along the hem to hold it out. That's what she does with hers.
I also may have the overskirt tied too tight in the back.
