Great Web Site

My brother found this web site today and passed it on to me and I thought I'd share it with all of you. The site owner has an amazing collection of original items, everything from gowns, to parasols, to hats, to underclothes, it seems like she has a little of everything, even kids clothes and has pu...

Re: Bombazine

I have a swatch of the Dharma Silk/Wool blend in front me right now and wanted to let you know that they say it is 63% silk and 37% wool. It is very light weight and I would classify it as a sheer since I can read fairly well through it. The color is much more of an ivory or cream than white, as are...

Re: Polonaise with train?

What about extending the Polonaise to have a train? You could then have it down for the ceremony and then up for the reception.

Wow, those are amazing! I am in awe! :D
I would love to hear how you sewed the feathers on securely but still kept that light, airy fealing. Somehow I can never do that for my hats.

Re: Which Fabric?

Thanks everyone for the opinion. I'm going to go with the silk. I do think that I will dye the fabric myself though so I can get the exact shade of blue that I want. I dye quite a bit so for me it's not an inconvience.

Re: Ladies' Gloves in the Bustle Period

Sarah, first of all I hope you feel better soon. As for the gloves, I have bought some from Ebay before, sometimes they come and are great, a few times they fell apart the first time I wore them so it's hit or miss but it can be a good place to look. I just make sure to set myself a price limit that...

Which Fabric?

I am in the process of gathering all my materials to make the blue dress in this painting http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Tissot_HMS_Calcutta.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . I have bought almost everythi...

Re: Which corset should I make?

I agree with MaryLou. If you're making an Edwardian dress you really need an Edwardian corset. The silhouette is completely different for the Victorian corset.

Re: Wedding Gown

OH YES!!! For the record the lace idea didn't work. Lace had no body would have had to place the beads no more than 6 or so inches apart & 30% stretch is a lot of stretch. We are going to Tucson to look at lace on Fri. I hope she agreed to wear the petticoat. I never understand why people pick ...

Suggestions for Tissot Gown

I have finally found a nice light blue cotton voile to make the blue dress from this Tissot painting http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Tissot_HMS_Calcutta.jpg I plan to use the tea gown pattern with some tweaks to make this. My question is, in the painting it looks as if there is no...

Re: PATTERN PAPER

I use muslin for my patterns. I find it helpful because it can be used as my toile and then all the changes I need to make are marked on it. The next time I make that particular item I pull out the muslin and it requires very little adjustment, assuming my weight hasn't changed too much.

Re: New Year's Resolutions

1. Grow my sewing business enough so that it will support me since my unemployment will run out soon. Think this is actually going to happen! :D 2.I would love to finish several projects I have started. 3. Find fabric I like for my Civil War sheer. I am in my mid 30s but I am constantly told I look ...

Try the Smoke and Fire site http://www.smoke-fire.com/ They publish a paper that has LOADS of events in it. Everything from Medieval to Civ War to Old West. I have gotten this paper a couple of times and am always amazed by the number of events it lists.

Re: Pattern Advice Needed

I love that dress too and have thought about making. Seems like a lot of us have. Would be interesting to see if there would be a way to set up a on-line get together where a bunch of people could chat about draping the overskirt as a way of helping each other out.
