Re: 1848.51 Bonnet

Oh my, Cathi, all of your bonnets and dresses are beautiful! I loved the red dress with the matching shoes. And how did you do your hair? So very nice.

corset help

Hi all. I need advice. I had a corset made for me because I was too chicken to try and sew one myself. I think it is the TV corset pattern, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the corset was too big when I got it. I took an inch in on each side, and that helped. Now I've lost weight and it is too big ag...

Re: Heather

So about what year did the E-silhouette come into being? This is from Corsets and Crinolines by Norah Waugh. "Throughout the nineteenth century silhouette-emphasis had been on the small waist and curves; the heavier corset of the end of the century exaggerated this still further until the fema...

Re: Heather

Wow, what an awesome find. I have seen many advertisements for garments like these, but never seen one for real. It combines a corset and bust improver, and was most likely for those ladies who preferred a more causal figure. It's labeled in the catalogue "Sahlin Perfect Form and Corset Combin...

Re: Heather

I have a reproduction 1908 Sears Catalogue and there are two corsets in it that look like they would work for the "well endowed" lady. One has straps and both cover the entire bust area. The one with straps is called "Sahlin" and there is one on Ebay now http://cgi.ebay.com/Victo...

14 inch waist or less

I recently purchased the book The Perfect Lady by C.W. Cunnington. It was published in 1948. I thought I would share some of what he has to say about the 1890's hourglass figure. "'Girls pull themselves in while they pad their hips and the side lines of the bust to make themselves look as much ...

Re: We need a hat thread!

Stealthflower, try emailing her again. Maybe your email got lost in cyberspace. :) I bought a bonnet and several other things from Pam and she was always prompt in answering my emails. She's a very nice person to deal with. I hope to buy another bonnet from her some day.

Re: Eastern Washington Area

Amused, there is the Oregon Regency Society which I think is based in Portland. Their website is http://www.oregonregencysociety.com , if you want to check it out. I've never been to any of their events, so I don't know what they are like. Looks interesting, though. I have a suggestion for anyone wh...

Re: Professional seamstresses in or around Portland, OR?

Just saw this post, so I'm a little late in answering. You may have found someone by now, but I thought I'd let you know, anyway, about a lady in Hillsboro who makes period costumes. Don't know if that is what you are looking for. Her website is http://www.lavendersgreen.com, if you want to check it...

Wasn't me

I swear, Heather, it wasn't me that bought out the poplin. I've had this material for over a year. I've been too afraid to use it because it's silk.

I'm glad the poplin is suitable for the dress. Thanks!

Need advice about TV244

Help! I need advice. I'm making plans for a dress using TV244 for the skirt. I'm making it out of silk poplin. I plan to use lining material for the upper part of the skirt base to save money. Would 100% cotton sateen be okay to use? I hope silk poplin is a good fabric to use for this dress. I decid...

Thank you, Heather, for your reply. It's good to know that this type of cage is often available on eBay. I wanted to buy one, but this particular cage has definitely seen better days. I'll keep checking for a better one.

Storing a silk dress

Help, I need advice! I recently purchased my first antique dress. :D How do I store it, and can it be cleaned? It is an 1880's bustle dress, and the seller says the material is silk faille. I was so excited about getting the dress, I never thought about how I would take care of it. Th...
