Re: Victorian ballerinas!

I've tried jetes and grand battement in the corset I have now when I did a cancan dress, but it was a no go. Though, I'm will to admit that maybe I screwed up the fit either by making it too long or too tight in the hip area. Heh, I'll take any excuse to splurge and make a better fitting new corset!

Victorian ballerinas!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've been over here! Anyway, I've been sewing a lot, dancing a lot, and now I'm back here with some new questions. I'm starting to research a project for the distant future (won't need it til spring 2015, but I might start construction sooner): late 19thC ballerina. ...

Re: Star Wars Victorian

Very neat! I've known a few people who've made things with that exact fabric, but this takes the cake for creativity!

soooo jealous you were at C5!

The Tissot "Too Early" dress is finally done!

So, the pink dress in James Tissot's painting "Too Early" has been my dream dress for a long time. I decided last August that it was probably (finally) within my skill level, spend months researching, and finally started at the beginning of this month, and I finished about a week ago (had ...

Re: Has Anyone thought of using DF for BJDs?

Excuse me for reviving a thread that's really old, but I feel the need to chime in. I've also been musing on the idea of making Demi Fashions patterns work for 60cm BJDs. One of these days, I think I'm going to work up the courage to get the patterns (I love the early bustle dress!) and resize/scale...

Re: We need a hat thread!

Hats are so much fun to make! I've only made buckram hats so far, but one day I'd like to try making a straw hat, they look fun.

I'm a big fan of the Lynn McMasters patterns. So far I've made the Romantic era bonnet, it was such an excellent pet project and turned out really well.

Planning an Edwardian dress...help!

I have another insane idea...what else is new? So, my mother has this antique Edwardian (we don't know the exact year, but my best guess is 1904-08) wedding converted into evening dress, and for a while I've been dying to draft a pattern based on it. I think I'm finally at a point where I may be abl...

Photos from the Arisia masquerade

I came across some really great photos of the Arisia 2010 masquerade, which, for anyone who's not familiar with sci-fi cons, is actually a costume contest with fun presentations. They're mostly sci-fi and fantasy costumes, but there are some lovely historically inspired costumes including my entry (...

Arisia 2010: Cambridge MA, Jan 15-18

I know there's a few people here who go to sci-fi cons, and I was wondering if anyone's planning on going to or interested in Arisia. It's at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, and it'll cover pretty much anything related to sci-fi and fantasy: films, lit, TV shows, and--of course--costumes! Everything...

My busy break, lots of sewing!

Well, I'm at the end of a very busy, very fun, and very productive winter break. I've cleared off two big works in progress and put a huge chunk in the other. Firstly, I finished my friend's dress that I started this summer! It's inspired by one of Mrs. Lovett's dresses from the film Sweeney Todd, b...

Are you Lucca on cos.com? Because last night I answered a very similar question over there, but just in case you're somebody else, I'm working on a Mrs. Lovett costume for a sci-fi con in January. Here's how I'm approaching it: I'm doing it in about seven basic parts: combination underwear (in brigh...

German plastic boning?

So, I'm going to be starting on a corset for my friend soon, and since we're on a shoestring budget, I'm wondering about using the German plastic boning from Farthingales as a lower cost option. Will this work well in a corset, or should we just try to save up a little more for steel? Has anyone tri...

Dragon Con photos!

So, I've got some pics from my recent Dragon Con adventure! More will come eventually, but now I need to pull myself away from the computer before I go crazy.

They're on my livejournal http://alpha-helixx.livejournal.com/5343.html

Enjoy!

Selling garments made from TV patterns?

So, I search around for quite some time, but I couldn't find anything specific enough to answer my question. I did find a pretty detailed discussion on the topic from a few years back, but that didn't help me very much. Anyway, I've been entertaining the idea of selling hats on Etsy or something sim...

2 works in progress: Hogwarts class of 1898 and Mrs. Lovett

Firstly, I've got my final Dragon*Con costume almost done. It's my Victorian interpretation of the Hogwarts uniform. I just need to make a hat, get a Ravenclaw tie, and get a wand. Had some interesting design evolution with the robe part. Ended up leaving off the sleeves because loose flowy wizard r...

Sweet, Star Trek! I was thinking of making the uniform from the original movies (the ones with the maroon jackets), but I already have too many costumes and too little time. I'll ask around at some other message boards and LJ communities to see if anyone else is interested in joining us. At the very...
