I guess it won't matter how crooked your machine stitching is, huh? If you can even see it! I was just doing dark brown and that was hard enough.

Thank you, all. The faille is a lot of fun to pouf. It has such great body and light-play characteristics. No give but still fun. I needed a lot of fray check though.

Ginny, I hope to have time this week to read my Demorest's/Delineator's/etc to see how often bustle pads are mentioned in the natural form years. Especially 78-81, when those years saw pencil-thin silhouettes. But I would not agree with the post on that other forum which seems to assert that in gene...

So Cal Civil War Event in May

If you live anywhere near, you may enjoy this 2-day event in May. A great place to wear your nice dress as it takes place on grass. http://www.goldcoastfestivals.com/civilwar_lb/civilwarpg_lb.htm http://www.goldcoastfestivals.com/images/civwarlb/longbeach%20cw%20home/picture_cd_009.jpg http://www.go...

I have no idea but if I were going to look for one, I'd check the yellow pages under seamstresses. And I would also check the vocational and city colleges and see if they have a fashion design department. The jr. colleges in my area do have them. There, you might find an interested instructor or stu...

This is the side. Fabrics used were brown satin and a fairly heavy cotton faille. Or part cotton, part something else. The selvage is all cotton. Seams, collar and trim are all piped. http://api.ning.com/files/mfZ5GlYkbA83w4PfCMA1oHh5fnPmz*7J869oQcJ0ubixTHgvlGQzYvOszEWVF7jtNPpbXpH6Rp0dkv8KaFWAnaCH20...

Re: seam finishing ideas

[quote="bansai8creations"] *I have to say I do a modified flat felled seam--I stitch the seam normally, then I trim one of the seam allowance in half, press the other to encase the narrower side, then from the right side, top stitch the folded & pressed allowances in place. Not suitabl...

I am making the tail bodice right now. Historically speaking, that tail part is a replacement for the overskirt's bustle. To have a separate overskirt in back is like putting icing on the icing of your cake. But that's just me. I made the basic 1885 underskirt to go with the tail bodice and sewed an...

I bought it at Hedgehog a while ago but I think Joady is selling off all her costume supplies. So I have the tape but have never used it. I have done two bodices with individual hook/eye closures. What a bear. I like buttons best. But I do have a button hole attachment that makes the job quite painl...

Ginny, most of my dresses are overcast by hand. It really is not that bad to do as it goes very fast. The seams I just did with the piping in them though were just too bulky so I covered everything in the bias stuff. The tape that has two little folded edges on each side. Not the foldover stuff. I m...

Yes, I remember that term now. I've seen a picture of a stay tape sewn to the darts and fastened in center to relieve pressure off the button closure. Outfit is almost done. Problem now is a diagonal wrinkle issue in the side back pieces. I know it has something to do with the lenghtening needed in ...
