Corset measurments

I'm looking at starting on my first Edwardian corset. Should I take my measurements over a Victorian corset, or is it better to measure over no corset?

Thanks!

I don't want to ask a silly question, but just wondered if you had used 1/2" seams or 5/8"?

Re: The dreaded full bust alteration

The false vest works! I have done it - I can't seem to post the picture here but you can see it in my Truly Victorian Gallery under Susan T (the blue polonaise). http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.php/v/public/smt22/2011+_Weddings+and+Wales_+025.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return ...

Re: Doing a hoop skirt - gather or gores?

If you did a gathered hoop, you could get the gathers how you want them, then cut a piece of tape or ribbon the length of each wire, and stitch it down at intervals along the gathers to stop them slipping. I'm not sure if that would be more or less bother than just making a gored hoop though!

I have made the chrysanthemum sleeve! (Although I put it on a bustle gown  ) I really liked the way it was made.

Great, thanks. The size, I'm happy to say, is "Smaller than this time last year" :D

Buttons for Belted Mantle

Hi Heather,

I'm making the early bustle Belted Mantle, and am finding the instructions thin on the ground regarding the buttons/frog closures. How many buttons do you think I would need? Do they just go down to the waist, or right down the front?

Thanks for your help,
Susan

Re: Which Material for 1870?

If you're in NZ you could try looking on Trademe as well. I used to get a lot of fabric from there when I lived in New Zealand. Also, you'd be amazed how much fabric you can get from a set of curtains or duvet covers from Savemart! :-)

Re: Natural form polannaise

I don’t think you need to change anything. I’ve worn mine without a bustle and it looks great. It just makes it a bit longer in the back, so if you didn’t like that you could shorten the back piece a bit :-)

Re: Gigot sleeve era hat?

Another way to get the BIG 90s hat is to cover a straw hat with fabric. That's what I did for these two hats (both last-minute, night-before-the-event jobs as usual!): http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=12038 http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.ph...

Lynn McMasters also has a good pattern:

I made this one last year for my sister, don't have a photo of it unfortunately, but it turned out great!

Love your dress! :)
