Trick of the eye

If a person is short, is it best to make a tall hat to make the eye think the person is taller?
I didn't think this would be such a tough question to find an answer for, but I have not been about to get the answer after asking google in several different ways. Grrr!
Thank you for any help with this!

Re: Color combination

Thank you, Heather!
No, I am not looking to be historically accurate.
On your "aside note", why is it not a good idea to combine stripes with brocade? I'd like to learn the "how to's" of that. :D

Color combination

I am wanting to recreate a dress that is at the Met Museum. The original is maroon and tan. I would like to try duplicating, but with Silver as the main color and purple as the accent. Do you think those two colors would work well together? On my monitor, this is as close as I could get it to look l...

Yes! I was thinking that the one inch from the back had to be moved to the front. :D Thank you!

Re: TV 430

Miss Heather,
For clarification, you said, "Add an extra 1/2" for a seam top to bottom, instead of on fold." Is that in addition to adding 1 inch to the front or do you mean 1/2" for both Left and Right front pieces?
So, glad Quallus asked this question! Thank you!

Re: Patterns advice needed

I would think that TV490 would work for you. I suspect that the picture on TV297 is basically that pattern, but modified some. Miss Heather mentioned at one point that she usually tweaked her patterns which ended up for the pictures.

Re: Tv201 velvet & pleating, inspiration?

You can pleat velvet. Yes, it does get thick, but still quite workable. Just pin well and often. ^_^ I have done one skirt with pleating and it was much easier than trying to gather all the material. But I tend to prefer pleats, anyway. If you have a Walking foot for your machine, that should help w...

Re: TV201 - connecting the dots

You are correct about needing to turn the side back piece upside down. Since you will be cutting two pieces, then you can attach one on each side of the back piece. I hope that helps.

Re: TV201 - connecting the dots

I cannot see the marks clearly, but it looks like your side back piece turned so that the wrong side is to the back. There should be the same number of those triangle shapes touching.
Attached two pictures for reference.

TV216 Parisian trained skirt 2018

Finished this skirt this past week. Tried to make the train bustle-able, in case of inclement weather. Of course you can see that it only has the top apron. I used two layers of netting to give the back more support, mainly because the net I found was not all that strong. Also, used an inside layer ...

Velvet for bodice

I am working on cotton velvet for a bodice and was wondering, since the fabric is thicker than other materials, should I add a little in sizing to compensate?
Thank you for any advice given!

TV216 Parisian trained skirt

Dear Miss Heather,
By any chance, do you have pictures to compare the back of this skirt with to without the bouffant?
Also, the largest size for waist on my copy is 40", but I am making this for a waist of 44". Where would be the best place to add the other 4 inches?
Thank you!

Re: Natural form skirt

Miss Heather, I realize you cannot see the material well, but under the pleats was a black fabric that was not polished cotton. It felt rather rough in texture and the weave was not real tight. Do you have any guesses what it might be? Also, for anyone interested, the whole skirt was lined basically...

Natural form skirt

I visited a local second hand store today and found this skirt, which I believe to be an original natural form skirt that was hand sewn. The color of the detail pictures are more accurate. And excuse my expression, lol!

Picture in a book

I was attempting to research Biblical clothing, but the book that I borrowed from the library only went back as far as 1700's. At the earliest. That being said, there is a photograph of a gown on page 290 of The Jewish Wardrobe From the Collection of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem that has fascinating...
