Re: 1838 Petticoat

Well, drat! This petticoat would only have three ruffles at the bottom, but if I can't say it's accurate, there's little point. I'll have to bite the bullet and make the corded version, I guess.

1838 Petticoat

I'm looking for evidence of petticoats from the late 1830s that are NOT corded. I'm working on a doll-sized replica of a museum dress from 1838 and it needs a petticoat to support the skirt. I started out making a corded petticoat, but after a bit of trial and error, I decided that a 1/3 scale corde...

Dating an Edwardian Chemise

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this thread, but I've been given what I believe is an Edwardian chemise of French make. It's silk crepe, entirely hand sewn with heirloom techniques: fagoting and hemstitching and silk embroidery. It's fairly straight, but with gussets inserted from the hips d...

Vest Front Bodice

Basically, I have two weeks to alter a bodice to fit me, after having lost 40 pounds. Because the workmanship is shoddy and it never fit well to begin with, I'm planning to throw it out and make a new one with leftover fabric, but the problem is, I haven't enough time before my event. I don't want t...

Re: Victorian Boots

Those are great! Going by the measurements, they might even be wide enough. Wouldn't that be something?

Re: Victorian Boots

Quick Update! I bought the lace-up boots and I'm very happy with them. I ended up with a size 9. The size 8 was wide enough, but they were too shallow across the instep. The top of my foot rubbed against the inside of the boot, so I exchanged them for a size 9, which fit better. The toes are a bit l...

Re: Ruffled Skirt

Ah, thank you! That does look like it might work. I'm looking at the yardage though, and I'm shocked. Seven yards just for the skirt base? Ten to twelve yards for the ruffles? Granted, mine will only have three wide ruffles, as opposed to a lot of narrow ruffles. And the front of the skirt is a diff...

Ruffled Skirt

I'm making a replica of a theater costume (see photo below). Basically, it's meant to be a Victorian interpretation of a Rococo gown, as made for an opera. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5456/6927673160_35ecb293b3.jpg Right now, I'm trying to figure out what shape to make the skirt pattern. (And ther...

Re: Victorian Boots

have you considered a pair of ice skate boots with the blades removed? Surprisingly, I did think of this yesterday, and I actually own three pairs of ice skates (acquired in my quest to find a pair of skates that actually fit so I could take skating lessons). It's a good idea in theory, but there a...

Re: Victorian Boots

Thanks for pointing that out. Zippers are fine, in this case. The costume is a replica of a theater costume, not a true Victorian outfit, so it's okay. I mean, I'd much rather have an authentic pair without zips, but they're hard to find. I'll probably order the lace-up boots, since I don't care for...

Re: Victorian Boots

I got the white ones for my younger daughter, in size nine if I recall correctly. I can't find a number anywhere on these boots, grr. They look narrow sitting on the shelf but I was able to squeeze my size ten foot into them and even walk. It seems like they have a bit of stretch to the ball of the...

Victorian Boots

I find myself in need of a pair of black Victorian boots for a replica theater costume I'm making. The original shoes were button boots, but I don't mind lace-ups if the fit is better. Since my budget is limited, I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two. Ellie Button Boots Pleaser Lace-up Boot...

Re: Alternatives for Embroidery

The fabric is a copper/gold shot taffeta. It looks orange in some lights, but tempered with gold, if that makes sense? The embroidery must be black. And it must resemble this sort of heart-and-vine motif. Here's a photo of the fabric with the design painted with fabric markers. http://farm8.staticfl...

Re: Alternatives for Embroidery

I have two big concerns about the freezer paper. First, paint seeps around the edges, making an imprecise image. It says it doesn't, but you can clearly see the bleed-through in the photos. That wouldn't be a problem if I don't use paint, but the fabric marker can and does bleed somewhat, and it wou...

SarahS wrote:Actually I think a better way might be using something like Elmer's Craft Bond spray adhesive. It let's you create a temporary bond just spray it on one side of the stencil wait 3 minutes and stick it on, use the marker, and peel it off and so on.

I'll look into that, thanks.

Re: Alternatives for Embroidery

Thanks for all the replies! ljt, I want to avoid painting, simply because the chance for failure is high. If just one motif gets smudged or messed up, it means I have to replace the entire ruffle, and I simply don't have enough fabric to do that. I've never screen printed before, but I'm guessing th...

Re: Alternatives for Embroidery

Okay, here are my samples. First we have a version done with the fabric marker. It turned out much better than I was expecting, to be honest. There was a slight amount of bleeding, but not too bad. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7408066206_93c7fdd3be_n.jpg (View bigger photo here.) Next we have ...

Re: Alternatives for Embroidery

Sorry, this is slightly off topic but I have been looking everywhere for info on Your Wardrobe's next competition and couldn't find any info. Do you have a link for information on the 2013 one? I don't know why there isn't a link to it on their main page, but an article from a few months ago contai...
