Re: 1875 Pleatmonster

I used the Perfect Pleater board for making the pleats, and then gathered some of them after pleating.

For the hat I just eyeballed it (didn't use a pattern) and made a mockup out of paper.

1875 Pleatmonster

It all started from an impulse buy (the checked silk) and just kept growing. I made it for the Historical Masquerade at Costume-Con this year. Bodice was based on TV405, overskirt based on TV305 and underskirt based on TV216 (all pretty heavily modified). I combined several fashion plates I liked, a...

Re: TV405 fitting problems

Thanks for the advice and comments! I think I've solved most of my issues (barring the abovementioned sleeve thing). Having not made Victorian costume before, are there any problems here that need to be fixed or will any wrinkles sort themselves out when I underline and bone the bodice? (I modified ...

Re: TV405 fitting problems

I'm thinking it was a combination of things - partly seam allowance, partly making the torso length adjustment only above the bust instead of just above the waist (I've split it so it's in both places instead). I'm working on a new mockup now and it seems to be going better, although I did go up in ...

TV405 fitting problems

Hi, I'm working on my mockup and am perplexed because I checked my measurements but it's too small to close. I don't know where the seams are supposed to fall, so am unsure where I need to cut it larger. Do I need to go up a size or two in the back or front, or both? Bust is 34", and I cut B in...

Two skirts, one waistband?

I have a very short waist so I'm not able to get much waist reduction even in a corset. To reduce bulk, I was wondering if there's any historical precedent for attaching an overskirt and underskirt to the same waistband? I'm working with modified versions of the Parisian Trained Skirt and the Bustle...

Re: Neckline options for 1875?

Followup question:

Image

How would the closure work on something like the one on the left, where there is no obvious centre opening? Would there be a hidden closure off-centre? Or elsewhere?

Re: TV101 tips up?!

I just made up the TV101 and had the same problem of the bustle tipping upwards. I have a short waist, a sway-back and a not-insignificant butt so I'm assuming it was a combination of these that caused the problem. I found that if I moved where the side seams of the bustle attach to the waistband, i...

Re: Neckline options for 1875?

Thanks so much for the detailed info! I'm mostly just waffling because V-necks tend to not be very flattering on me (I have very narrow shoulders and wider hips) so I usually go with a squareish neckline in order to balance out my proportions. But I do like the look of the pleats and ruffles on the ...

Neckline options for 1875?

So I'm embarking into my first Victorian dress (have done 1700s before) and I've chosen an 1875 fashion plate to base my dress on: (the one on the left) https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/f1/53/88/f1538815e1bfd6261937d09624360505.jpg Most fashion plates don't show the front of the dress, so i...

A couple of TV101 questions

I'm making a dress from 1875 and it's my first venture into Victorian costume (have done 1700s previously). Question #1: Since the Canadian dollar is so weak right now I'd rather buy hoop wire locally if possible. Would standard 6mm flat steel boning work for this pattern? Or would I need 10mm (whic...

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to mess around with it on my dressform and see if I can get the rather stiff taffeta to drape nicely. After looking at some of the TV drawings I'm thinking darts at the hipline might help. Feel free to use it for inspiration, Danibelle, although of course I'd rather ...

Help with a front swag

I'll admit up front that I didn't get a TV pattern for this (original steampunk lolita dress) and thought I'd just wing it, as I am planning on doing a historically accurate bustle dress in the future but haven't decided on the exact style and so didn't want to buy a pattern just yet. I'm having tro...
