Re: Parasol skeleton

Love - love - Vena Cava! If there's something you're after they don't already stock, it's always worth dropping her a quick line, too. She's fabulously helpful and usually happy to try and track an item down for you!

Re: Mourning dress from the Met

Ohhh that is absolutely scrumptious! You know you're doing something right when the modern project looks superior to the original! Beautiful textures, too.

Surprised there wasn't much on Pinterest, but a Google image search for "1880s winter coat" seemed to turn up plenty?

Re: Gigot sleeve era hat?

Vena Cava have all the materials for the Lynn McMasters hats too - I'd be lost without that shop! I'd really love to hear how you get on with the pattern if you try it. I've had the buckram etc sitting looking accusingly at me for months now, but still haven't been brave enough to get on and start w...

Re: crowning glory

I don't know what Kanekalon is It's a particular type of synthetic hair that has a very natural feel to it, comes in a huge range of colours, plays nicely with hot irons etc and, best of all, is usually very affordably priced! An aside, but I've learned to avoid hairdressers like the plague too! :D...

Re: crowning glory

From everything I've read, hair pieces were common in Victorian stylings. Either way, you're not alone in struggling to get your lovely fine hair to play nicely! You could try a sock bun to get some simple volume: http://pinterest.com/pin/145100419215774156/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return f...

There's a great range of hat patterns by Lynn McMasters, if you fancy making your own: http://www.lynnmcmasters.com/patterns.html

I suspect a fair number of us just added tablet reading to our "to learn" list! Looks like a very useful skill to acquire.

Re: New brown 1860 walking dress

Oh wow - that is absolutely beautiful! The translation option (not sure if that's a blog feature or a Chrome one?) works well enough to get the general idea from the text, too. Really impressed by that fringing you made! Did you follow a tutorial of some kind, or was it something you already knew ho...

Re: TV110 fitting issues!

Makes sense. I'll definitely give the separate lacing a go, although I can only loosen it so far before there's no support in the front! I've found some cheap twill to get another trial run out of, so I'll hang onto the eyelet panel from this attempt to save pennies until I get it right.

Re: TV110 fitting issues!

Soo... good news, bad news! The bad news is, I've come out with exactly the same problem as before in terms of overspill at the sides and back. The other bad news is, I've run out of boning, eyelets and fabric I don't mind wasting, so I suspect attempt #3 is going to have to wait a while! The good n...

Re: Viking Emerald sewing machine

I got a Viking 118 based on the Husqvarna love I'd seen on Truly Victorian, and can honestly say it was love at first stitch! To the best of my knowledge, the main difference between 118 and 116 is the number of stitch options? I can't say I ever feel a particular need to venture beyond straight, zi...

Eaton's Catalogues - 1897 onwards

Just thought I'd pass on this rather interesting link someone was kind enough to share with me. Assorted turn of the century catalogues for a Canadian department store called Eaton's. Some lovely images to be found! http://archive.org/search.php?query=eaton+catalogue" onclick="window.open(this.href)...

Re: TV110 fitting issues!

Reassuring to know about the wrinkles - thank you! I've just finished tracing off the new pattern, so note to self: pick matte fabric for this attempt! I've extended the pieces by ½" right the way round, gone with the C cup, kept the centre front panel size C, but the rest I've brought up to D...

Re: TV110 fitting issues!

Oh this is such a huge help - thank you so much, Heather! Should I add the half inch all round, or just in the front panels? No bra in the picture, though I'm more generously endowed than naturally buoyant! I'd far rather trust your fitting instincts than hold to any convention on the cup siz...
