A Year in Dresses

After a fashion, at least... I just realized that after my panicked post about fitting the vest basque, I never shared pictures of the finished outfit! Or the other two outfits I made/wore this year. (What I learned this summer: Start your garments more than a week before you leave for a con. Ugh, I...

Re: Vest basque help

Thank you again for the assistance, Heather. I should have known better than to make guesses at fit when I wasn't wearing my corset. It's perfect, although I'm not sure how to keep my chemise from showing (but that's a problem for next week lol)

Re: Vest basque help

I will let out the shoulder seam and see how that works :) Once the front was put in it really fit a lot better than I thought it was going to. Thanks again :)

Re: Vest basque help

Certainly :3 the neckline is mostly behaving now that I have the front pieces in (I feel like they are too high, but I could probably just take a straight 1-2" off the top instead of tucking like I thought... Darn this summer cold). The arms don't feel too tight either. http://i3.photobucket.co...

Re: Vest basque help

It's one of the hand-drawn patterns, but I will try to put the vest piece on normally first and see what happens :) I have a new question! The armscye sits directly in my armpit and rubs any part of my underarm no matter what I'm doing D: Is that normal or should I take it down a bit? The back of th...

Vest basque help

Ladies, I have a dilemma. I usually take 2" out of the upper chest of my pattern which has been working great, but I'm running into trouble with the vest basque. The tuck in the pattern falls right at the top, and I get a really weird shape at the top. Should I take it out of the bottom instead...

Re: What do you use for tracing patterns

I buy a roll of tracing paper at the art supply store :D A 20 yard roll 24" wide runs me about $15 Canadian :D It's easy to see through and holds up well to multiple pinning sessions.

How to make a pleating board

My aunt pinned this on Pinterest a couple days ago. Thought of you lovely ladies (and gents) right away! Gonna have to make me one of these :D

416 Ballgown bodice - shoulders?

Hello all, I am busily constructing a bodice to wear to a time-traveller's ball this weekend (meep! Leaving it a little last minute... good job self). I've taken in the "souffle" chest effect I was getting before (thanks Heather :) ) which has changed the armhole somewhat. I think I can ju...

Re: Bodice fitting, "falling" chest

This is the mock-up. Thank you for the suggestions, I can't wait to try them out :)

I'm not sure if the armhole is actually wrong. The side you see in the photo is the side holding the camera out. I'll check it with the next fitting to be sure.

Re: Bodice fitting, "falling" chest

Hopefully these work. There's a lot of floral going on here hehe. I have the top portion at the neck pinned to 2" and the bottom part in the 1" - 1 1/4" range http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/totchipanda/th_IMG_4382.jpg Shoulders hunched forward to maximize the fallen souffle, it'...

Bodice fitting, "falling" chest

I apologize if this has been asked before, I have no idea what search terms to use :( I've recently gained some weight and am having to refit my wardrobe (plus the fourth annual train trip is on in less than a month and I need a new outfit!). My backwidth of 14" has not changed. Bust is 39"...

Re: gather/ruffle foot help.

I've had some luck with the chart at the end of this (free) e-book. It takes some time and a lot of fabric strips to figure out the ratios, but it's mostly worth it. http://www.youcanmakethis.com/products/free/free-the-ruffler-unruffled.htm

Re: french vest bodice back pleats

Here's how I did mine: http://pics.livejournal.com/totchipanda/pic/0005qpet
I think they need a pressing, but I'm a bit of a stickler like that. I also think I should remove my skirt pleat and sew the back of each one down to keep them crisp...

Re: Heather: we need a new pattern!

I would happily wait for you to make up some 1910s stuff (Guess who just finished watching Downton Abbey this morning and was late for work because of it?). I LOVE the way the rest of your patterns go together and quite frankly I'm ruined for any other company to win my loyalty at this point.

Re: Annual Train Excursions (2010 and 2011)

Thanks everyone :) Diana, I live in Canada; it was a 27 hour drive from here to Reno and I'm not eager to repeat the experience! However, I loved being in Carson City, and I loved Virginia City even more, and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get some pictures on their boardwalk and ride the stagecoach agai...

Annual Train Excursions (2010 and 2011)

Hey all, I had posted in 2009 about my mom and I taking a steam train trip and how we had dressed up in Victorian :3 Well, our social group thought it was a fantastic idea, and we've been in the last two years, with more and more people dressing up. This year we had 16 costumers! 2010 http://i3.phot...

Train Trip in Style

My mom and I recently went on a steam train trip with some friends. Being the costume nuts that we are, we decided to dress up :D http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/totchipanda/victorian.jpg My mom is wearing TV440 (bodice) and TV246 (petal skirt) over her Elizabethan chemise and hoop (we both fig...
