I've worn several of my TV bodices without a corset. The bodices are well boned by themselves, and I make them with full bag linings so they're easily wearable as modern clothing.

I've used the Laughing Moon patterns and I quite like them. The frock coat pattern is a bit complicated for a first-timer, but the vest is gorgeous, as is the shirt pattern, and the pants go together pretty well, too. I've got a heap of scans of period "Cutter's Guides", which give details...
